Whisky of the month March: Benriach The Smoky Twelve - a smoky Speyside experience

Benriach Whisky The Smoky Twelve

Benriach The Smoky Twelve 12 y.o. is an exceptional single malt whisky that combines traditional Speyside elegance with a distinctive smoky note. Its triple maturation in different casks gives it remarkable depth and complexity. This whisky is a must for anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable taste experience.

In contrast to many other Speyside whiskies, which are known for their floral and fruity aromas, The Smoky Twelve has a distinct smoky note. However, this smokiness is not overwhelming, but harmoniously integrated into the overall picture and gives the whisky an additional dimension.

Flavor profile: Smoked vanilla, orange, roasted almonds, dark chocolate, fruit peel, brown sugar and smoked oak.

The Benriach Distillery

History of the distillery

The Benriach distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff and is located near the town of Elgin in the heart of Speyside. The name “Benriach” translates as “the mottled hill”. Like many Scottish distilleries, Benriach has had a chequered history with phases of closure and reopening. It remained closed for a particularly long time in the first half of the 20th century. In recent decades, Benriach has experienced a renaissance under different owners and gained recognition for its innovative whiskies.

Independent whisky bottlers are companies that buy whisky from different distilleries, bottle it under their own label and sell it. They offer a wide variety of flavours and often also rare or forgotten whiskies. Thanks to their flexibility, close relationships with distilleries and the ability to revive old stocks, they enrich the whisky world and are appreciated by enthusiasts.

In addition, independent bottlers often have close relationships with the distilleries from which they source their whiskies. These relationships can allow them to access unique casks or select casks that match the specific flavour preferences of their customers. Because of their flexibility and commitment to quality, independent bottlers can often offer whiskies of remarkable depth and complexity.

Another aspect that characterises independent bottlers is their role in preserving and reviving rare or forgotten whisky brands. Whisky from Germany

Whisky from Germany is becoming increasingly popular and recognised in the world of spirits. Although Scotland and other traditional whisky-producing countries are still the frontrunners, German distilleries have experienced a remarkable upswing in recent years.

Historical background:

The history of whisky in Germany dates back to the Middle Ages, but modern whisky production only began in recent decades. German distilleries began to focus on the production of single malts, blended whiskies and other whisky varieties.

Regional diversity:

Similar to Scotch whisky, there are different regions in Germany, each with their own character and techniques. For example, regions such as Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia are known for their whisky production.

Quality and innovation:

German whisky producers are focussing on quality and innovation in order to assert themselves on the market. Some distilleries are experimenting with different barrels for maturation, including former wine, beer and even fruit brandy barrels, resulting in interesting flavour profiles.

Slyrs Whisky

Slyrs is a German whisky distillery based in Schliersee in Bavaria. The story of Slyrs began in the 1990s, when entrepreneur Florian Stetter had the idea of producing Bavarian single malt whisky. Inspired by Scottish whisky traditions and the unique landscape of Bavaria, he founded the distillery and began production.

The name ‘Slyrs’ is derived from a mountain near the distillery. This connection to the local area is also reflected in the distillery's philosophy, which aims to produce high-quality whisky using local ingredients and traditional methods.

Slyrs whisky is made from Bavarian barley malt, which is carefully processed in the distillery's own malting plant. The mash is then distilled in copper pot stills, with particular attention paid to the quality of the distillation process in order to produce a rich and expressive whisky.

Whisky from the Eifel region

The Eifel, a region in Germany, is known for its picturesque landscape, its history and its cultural diversity. But in recent years, the region has also gained recognition for its whisky production.

The Eifel region offers an abundance of grains and pure spring water, which are essential for the production of whisky of the highest quality. These regional ingredients give Eifel whisky a unique flavour and character that sets it apart from other whiskies on the market.

The climatic conditions of the Eifel also play a role in the maturation of the whisky. The temperature fluctuations and humidity in the region contribute to the whisky developing different aromas and flavour profiles during storage, resulting in a complex and balanced end product.

American whiskey

American whiskey refers to a variety of whiskeys that are produced in the United States. American whiskey is generally made from fermented grain mash, which is distilled and then matured in oak barrels. The best-known types of American whiskey are bourbon, Tennessee whiskey and rye whiskey.

American whiskey

Bourbon is one of the best-known American whiskeys and is mainly made from a mash that contains at least 51% corn. Matured in new, charred oak barrels, the whiskey is characterised by its sweet, spicy flavour.

American whiskey

Similar to bourbon, Tennessee whiskey is made from a mash that contains at least 51% corn. The difference is that Tennessee whiskey goes through a special filtration process called ‘charcoal mellowing’, where the whiskey is filtered through charcoal made from sugar maple before it is matured. This process gives it a smoother flavour compared to bourbon.

American whiskey

Rye whiskey is made from a mash that contains at least 51% rye. It often has a spicier flavour compared to bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. Rye whiskey was historically the dominant American whiskey style before bourbon.

The origins of Japanese whisky production date back to the late 19th century, when some visionary Japanese distillers began to study the art of whisky making in Scotland. One of the pioneers was Masataka Taketsuru, who studied the art of whisky distillation in Scotland and then returned to Japan to set up his own distillery. In 1923, he finally opened the Yoichi distillery on the northern island of Hokkaido, which is now part of the Suntory Group.
